The Oasis Problem for Software -- Release Early, Release Often?

   

I wrote previously on Some Specifics of Conducting Open Source Projects. One thing I’m starting to understand now I guess could be called “The Oasis Problem”. Namely, my 2.0 release is looking to be a long haul — to get right what I want to get right, where before I’ve been focused on some very heavy support and quick releases. I’ll explain the analogy.

Assume you are a lone nomad OSS project hacker. If you are travelling a set course through a desert, it is not hard when there are plenty of watering holes to stop at — to share, trade, stock up on supplies, etc. You can build up a nice audience. In our analogy, consider these watering holes the activity of bugfixing and contribution that spikes around software releases.
